Youth rugby robustness

PREPARE TODAY.
PLAY TOMORROW.

A clear, practical framework to help young rugby players build the physical qualities they need to prepare for training, tolerate the demands of the game and stay available to perform.

What is Rugby Robust? Not just injury prevention. Preparation for the demands of rugby.

Rugby Robust combines our understanding of youth rugby injuries, neuromuscular training principles and the demands of the sport into one practical system players can understand and use.

Who leads it? Delivered by George Gauntlett Physio, with 8 years in senior and academy men’s rugby.

01

Know the game

Understand the physical demands, common injury patterns and why preparation matters.

02

Build better preparation habits

Learn a repeatable movement-prep structure that can sit around rugby training and matches.

03

Develop robustness

Target control, strength, balance, capacity and reactive qualities at the shoulder, knee and ankle.

Rugby Robust Workshop

Educate. Test. Prep. Perform.

A practical, player-friendly workshop for young rugby players and their parents, bringing together education, movement preparation, robustness training and simple testing in one session.

01 / EDUCATE

Know the game

Common rugby injuries, how they happen, what increases risk and how preparation can help.

02 / TEST

Simple screening

Useful mobility, balance and capacity measures to help players understand where they are now.

03 / PREP

Movement preparation

A clear warm-up framework informed by neuromuscular training and the principles used in rugby preparation.

04 / PERFORM

Robustness circuit

Partner-based shoulder, knee and ankle work using move, control, build and react progressions.

The practical framework

Move. Control. Build. React.

Each area is progressed from movement options, into control and physical capacity, then into more reactive rugby-relevant challenges.

01

MOVE

Develop the mobility and movement options needed to access useful rugby positions before adding more control, load or speed.

02

CONTROL

Position, balance, coordination and neuromuscular control before adding more load or speed.

03

BUILD

Develop strength and capacity so key tissues and movement patterns can tolerate repeated rugby demands.

04

REACT

Add decision-making, perturbation, partner interaction and speed to bridge preparation towards the game.

Beyond the workshop

Choose the next step that fits the player.

Rugby Robust is designed as an entry point, not a one-size-fits-all programme. Players can continue with group sessions or individual testing and bespoke programming depending on their needs.
